What landlords should never do
- Ask you to pay a deposit, first month, or "holding fee" before you have viewed the unit and signed a lease
- Request payment by international transfer, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
- Ask you to send money to "hold" a listing sight-unseen
- Tell you to go see the house without them and take a look around yourself
How to protect yourself
- 1Never send money before viewing the property in person and signing a lease.
- 2Be cautious of prices well below market, or landlords who "can't meet in person."
- 3Keep all communication and payments traceable — avoid cash or paying by gift cards to strangers.
- 4Report anything suspicious using the "Report this listing" button on any listing.
